This just feels wrong, like it's not a versus game, but a co-op game, since the characters stand besides eachother.

Not terrible. The guy in the background cuts off, maybe if you find a render of his full body, that would work better. Also, maybe the background guy should be fully opaque and the other 2 should be in the background.
