Before I made my Legend of Zelda box for the Retro round of the VGBA Cup, I knew I either wanted to do Zelda, Metroid, or Mega Man. I felt like I needed to get this out of my system. I'm going to give it a day or two and decide which box I'm going to officially enter in the competition.

Metroid ultimately had the most potential for the "what was the artist thinking?" theme. LoZ was kind of boring with just a generic knight/dragon/wizard thing going on, but Metroid had a lot more going for it as far as confusion for an uninformed artist. I thought it would be funny if the artist made Samus a masculine robot, got the color scheme wrong, ignored character designs, etc. I started getting into it with things like the handgun instead of a canon-arm, and then I thought "What the hell. Let's just throw a robot-katana in there." As I worked on it I decided to throw some Transformers-style wheels on Samus' feet for good measure.

I'm not sure if I'm more comfortable with this one, but I definitely think I achieved the "blind artist" look much better than LoZ.

Please tell me what you think.

You need to make a ton more of these. At least do a Mario one before you're done.

The only thing that seems out of place is the katana. What in the game's description would suggest Samus uses a sword? Even bad box Mega Man made sense if you thought about the basis of the game.

The art and execution is otherwise well done.

Looks terrible, nice job.

Seriously though, I think I liked the Zelda one more, this one doesn't look like Metroid, but honestly the artwork isn't that bad.

I like the art and the overall feeling, but i think this sort of approach you've gone for is best suited to a template like the one Pan used for Sweet Home, as, like you said on your Zelda box, this template is technically inaccurate.

Still, a good piece, but i think it would have had a better effect if it was on the said template.

#2, I've been thinking about making a series out of this, but the art is something I'm really having to force since "bad art" isn't that inspiring for me. I might do a Mario one if any ideas come to me, though.

I was originally going to use a full-box-template but the image looked really thinned out, so I decided to go with the template I had done for LoZ. I guess it was the lazy way out since it just required a few tweaks here and there.

#5, I had my doubts about putting it in, but ultimately it made me giggle too much not to. This idea wasn't solely inspired by Mega Man. It was also inspired by boxes like Psycho Soldier (From link to link which might as well have been using Bruce Willis from Die Hard for a cover to Pokemon. The more inaccurate, the better.

#8, Okay, that's understandable then. I think I need to seek out more bad boxart gems lol.
