Wow, I haven't worked this much on a box since my Sonic boxes. This round's challenge was extremely enjoyable for me to work around. I'm sure a lot of people felt the goal was to exercise their ability to create minimal designs, but I was much more interested in trying to come up with something that doesn't look like it's being affected by a restriction. I really felt like I got a work out with this one.

I was originally going to draw my own artwork for this, but I've always struggled with Spider-Man, and I was pressed for time (I really didn't want to cut it closely.) I did the next best thing, I found a fantastic picture by Joe Madureira, my all-time favorite comic book artist: link

Using a combination of my tablet and the pen tool (With pencil strokes), I elaborately recreated the line art from the original image, then used the shading on the original as a basis to create my own shadows and highlights. I filled them all in and would select their areas and replace it with Paint Bucket patterns I had previously created. The darker the shadow, the more dense the pixels in the pattern. I used this method for the entire image, from the gradients to the clouds. The buildings were especially painstaking. The entire city scape is made of nothing but black and white pixels.

I'm so excited to have finished this, and I'm very eager to hear your opinions about it. It's more important now than ever to look at the printable. Reshaping the image to fit in the presentation inevitably blurred the image, so the only way you'll be able to see the image in its full glory is to look at the printable, and be mindful of the fact that, due to the patterns I used, different zoom amounts alter the quality of the image drastically. So be sure to hold CTRL and roll the mouse wheel to zoom in/out and explore the image.

EDIT:
I can't upload the printable. It's too large, so here's a mirror for it:

This has to be one of my favorite Playstation games, I remember me and my cousin used to fight over who got to play it. I still have this game, and it is amazing for a Spider-Man title.

Honestly, I don't like the back that much. But that doesn't matter, because of the amazing front. Honestly, this is ridiculous. I thought for sure that this was like 15 colors and ineligible. Really well done on the front. It looks so good, especially for only 5 colors.

It's an amazing game in general, it's especially fantastic for a Spider-Man game. My favorite thing about it was the fact that you would unlock alternate costumes that each had different affects on the gameplay. If you wanted super easy mode, you could play as Captain Universe. If you wanted hard mode, you could play as Peter Parker. Genius!

#3, to be honest, I struggled with coming up with the back. The front was 95% of my focus on this project. Once I was done with it I realized I had nothing for the back. I like the back, but it doesn't match the front. It's a very drastic style change (From Comic Book cover style to more symbolic imagery and silhouettes.) but it's all I could really think to do (And I'll be honest, I spent hours upon hours working on that cover. I was burnt out.)

#4, I believe you, haha. It is obvious you focused on the front, and I am actually glad you did. It is better that you didn't make a mediocre front and back in my opinion. Rather, you made an awesome front, and a decent back. People at the store only look at the front anyway XD

Nice. I would like to see some info on the back to see what the game is all about though.

I didn't think we should be putting these up yet, since Flexx gave us an extended due date of tomorrow.

Anyway, love the front. Absolutely beautiful. The back could be a little better thought out, but still looks good in it's own right.

Joe Madureira is also one of my favorites. For American comics, my favorites are Joe Madureira, Frank Miller, Michael Turner and Todd MacFarlane.

#8, I didn't think about the extension. I was going by the first post in the thread. Oh well, it's unfortunate, but not the end of the world. I was wondering why I was the only person to upload it.

Ryan Otley is really amazing as well. He's the guy that does Invincible.

#9, I haven't seen Otley's work, I'll look him up.

I don't think it's a big deal, you posting early. I actually was afraid I missed the deadline again, that I imagined the extension for a second lol.

Nice job working around the color limitations, pretty clever. I really like the front image, despite not even being the biggest Spider-Man fan.

Printable is kind of a mess, but looks pretty awesome for being five colors. Needless to say, I prefer the actual uploaded version.

The printable does look weird, this version is awesome though. The front is jaw-dropping and the back is cool too.

Wow. I was almost sure this was one than five colors until I downloaded the printable and looked at it closely. This is one of the most creative boxes on the site. Not only did you work around the five color rule flawlessly, but your work around also fits the comic book style.

Wow.

I'm not a big fan of the back, it just isn't very attractive, but I'm going to fav this anyway.

Thanks gang. I know what you guys are talking about with the printable version. If you'd like to see it properly, you'll have to open it up in Photoshop and zoom in to various levels. For some reason the zoom drastically messes with how the patterns are formed. Hypothetically, if you were to print it out it would look as good as the presentation version, but the computer screen just struggles with the pixel patterns I used at various levels of zoom.

I definitely recommend using Photoshop (Or another program like that) to explore the image for the full effect. (Don't use Windows Picture Viewer, though. It blurs pixels when you zoom in.)

i was certain that this was more than 5 colors, so good job fooling me. The front design is nice, but the empty back isn't my kind of thing. Nothing wrong with it, I just don't usually like this sort of design.

Also the presentation was also supposed to be 5 color, is this different from the one you sent in?

I'm faving this only for the front, it's awesome!
especially with a 5 color limit you did extremely well.

As many others, I'm not really liking the back it doesn't really match with the front,
also I personally don't really like the colors used on the back.

#17, I had no idea the presentation was supposed to adhere to the rules as well. I don't remember reading that.

#18, I feel you on those colors. I experimented with what I could produce, and for some reason color combinations weren't working out the way I wanted (For example, yellow and blue checkered pattern produces a brownish color. Not green.)

#21, Different symbiotes are different colors. You searched for Carnage, which is red and black. link As you can see, the color can vary from character to character. More to the point, though, the symbiotes in the PS1 Spider-Man game were a pinkish-purple. (link
